Day 114 – 118

It feels like its been a slow few weeks! The weather has been miserable and so the outside of the house hasn’t been completed. We’ve been waiting for the first coat of plaster to dry so the final, pre-coloured plaster can be applied. I hope the ‘hot pink’ colour we’ve chosen for the house will look good.

Meanwhile inside the house the ceilings were insulated with sound insulation and plaster board was applied. It looks great and gives the place a new, brighter and bigger feel. Over the next few days the walls will be covered in plaster board and for the first time we’ll have proper rooms. No more looking from one end of the house to the other!!

It would be lovely to have a few nice sunny days though.

We have finally had to start drawing down on the mortgage which will increase the pressure to get the house completed. It seems like the end is just around the corner, yet at the same time, it feels like its very far away!

Day 105 – More insulation!!

Now the upstairs insulation has been completed! Though there are still a few spots that need to be done as the heat recovery ventilation isn’t finished yet. All the electrics and plumbing is now embedded into the insulation. Let’s hope they don’t give problems later!!!

The pictures today show how the insulation has been brought into the attic, and into very hard to reach areas like the apex of the den!

It was starting to get dark when we went down to see the house today, and peewee the dog came with us. Unfortunately while we were upstairs, peewee fell into the the crawl space under the house. We got her out, but she bruised her leg. Poor little doggie. She’s doesn’t see well! We’ll have to keep a better eye on her.

Day 104 – Spray foam insulation – the stuff of magic!

Today was very exciting, as the upstairs gets its first taste of the soy based, spray foam insulation. This stuff is incredible. It sprays on as a liquid and then expands to 100 times its size, filling and sealing every little gap, hole, or crack. It can be sprayed into areas that would otherwise be impossible to reach, into gaps that would be too small for other types of insulation. Once its expands it immediately hardens and becomes inert, never degrading, always keeping its insulating properties.

Once hard, the excess is trimmed to make the walls flat, ready for the plaster board. To the touch its feels warm and soft. There is no smell from its once its hard! I love it!!

The real benefit to this type of insulation is that it completely seals the house, so heat can’t escape (except very slowly), which will cut our heating costs considerably!

Here are some pictures with captions!!
