Day 35 to 38 – Walking IN our new home, we have walls!!

10 Aug

You can imagine my surprise when I got home from a week in Kilkenny to see the timber frame of the ground floor of our new home almost up! Even though it was pouring out of the heavens, I took a leisurely walk through its rooms and spaces. For the first time there is a real sence of the spaces inside the house and I’m very pleased with how it’s all coming together.

It was very nice to return the following morning to see the house bathed in sunshine!

The first thing I noticed when walking on site this week, is the beautiful smell of wood! Its rich colour and its warmth. I’m so so glad we went with wood! Hopefully you’ll get a good sense of how things have moved along over the last week and a half. In the last few pictures of the slideshow below you can see the builder making a temporary stairs, when I visit the site tomorrow, I’ll be able to walk up it and around the first floor!!

I can’t wait for when Rob comes on site at the weekend.. He hasn’t seen it in two weeks!

Wow, that must be cool to have gone back and seen so much progress!! It looks great! I’m a little curious though to hear how the timber frame and plywood will keep you warm though! so far it doesn’t look like much.

Congratulations on it, it’ll be beautiful!

Hi Sis, It was brilliant to see so much done… and there is even more done now! The insulation we are using is a soy based spray foam insulation. It sprays between the wood joists in liquid form and then expands to 100 times its size, filling every nook and cranny. This makes the building completely air tight. Wood in itself is a good insulator and because no air can get in or out (except though ventilation – which also keeps the heat in) there will be nowhere for the heat to go. Windows will be triple glazed. This type of insulation is superior to other types, because of its airtightness. It doesn’t degrade… brilliant stuff!! So that should keep us warm. There will also be waterproof membranes, and other layers (not sure what yet) on the inside!
